The Book As Art

WEEK TWO (5-day): July 1 – 5, 2019  Classes run 9 am – 4 pm daily and students are welcome to stay late in their studio.

The Book as Art

During the last twenty years, the book has been radically transformed into a medium for creative expression. Artists have diversified the book by innovating hand-made books, altered books and book sculptures. This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to explore and experiment with the book as a form of art, providing basic skills and techniques at individual levels through projects that encourage creativity.

Using a wide range of techniques such as paper cutting, layering, folding, ripping, sewing, and collaging, the workshop will introduce basic forms of hand-made books such as accordion, star, tunnel and cut outs, while expanding on these techniques to incorporate found objects to make imaginatively crafted works of art. Extending work with hand-made books and book sculptures, the workshop will also engage with painting, drawing and collage to alter existing books into new forms. No experience is necessary, just a love for creative process!

All levels welcome

Connie Michele Morey

Connie Michele Morey is an interdisciplinary artist whose work focuses on the materials and practices of sculpture, working primarily with wood, ceramics, textiles and book arts. She received her BFA in Visual Arts from the University of Lethbridge focusing on ceramics and sculpture and then completed graduate work in Art Education. Connie is the Programming Manager at Arc.hive Artist Run Centre and teaches sculpture, drawing, painting at the University of Victoria and supports on an on-call basis with the Ceramics Program at Camosun College. She has exhibited and performed locally, across Canada and overseas in Europe, Australia and Malaysia.

What a Relief! Colour Relief Printmaking

What a Relief! Colour Relief Printmaking

Have you ever looked at a colour woodcut and wondered how it is done?

There are different approaches to relief printmaking, but the essence can be learned in a weekend course.
Suitable for both beginners and experienced printers, this intensive 2-day workshop introduces participants to colour relief woodcut printmaking. Participants will gain a good understanding of the basic materials and techniques, learn how to transform their drawings into print format, how to cut blocks, and gain understanding of how to register and print through the reduction process of colour printing. The instructor will show samples of his prints to shine light on a range of approaches and effects.

All levels welcome

Richard Tetrault

Richard Tetrault is a White Rock born and Vancouver based painter, printmaker and muralist. His studio work focuses on the shifting dynamics and transient nature of the contemporary urban landscape.

Tetrault has exhibited his woodcuts and paintings in more than 70 exhibitions across Canada and internationally, and he is represented in numerous public and private collections. His work has appeared in publications, theatre works, graphics and contemporary dance. Tetrault’s public projects include murals that bridge diverse communities in innovative ways.

Along with his partner, photo-based artist Esther Rausenberg, they founded Creative Cultural Collaborations Society in 2010 with the aim of developing unique, publicly engaged projects. Tetrault is a founder of the Eastside Culture Crawl in his community in East Vancouver.

He is a recipient of The City of Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award (2008) and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal (2010).

Urban Sketching with Ink & Watercolour

Urban Sketching with Ink & Watercolour

The Urban Sketching movement is catching on, and for good reason! In this workshop students will learn to create quick and loose watercolour sketches that capture the mood and essence of a place. We will investigate and practice the choice of subject and composition while learning a systematic approach to sketching your environment. We will complete our works with a series of watercolour washes.

Weather permitting, we will work outdoors. Have fun and join the movement!

Peter Loebel

Peter is a visual artist whose inspirations are the human figure and plein-air subjects. He works with charcoal, ink, and watercolour and develops his compositions from a quick gestural drawing done on site. Each representation attempts to break the static condition of the subject, revealing a vibrant movement and creating a transitional snapshot.

Peter was born in Germany and moved to Canada in 2001. He has a background in engineering and in 2010 finished his MA in Architecture. His fascination with figure drawing roots back to 2001 when he joined Basic Inquiry, a life drawing studio in Vancouver, and later joined the board. He is now life-drawing in Victoria and is also associated with a variety of local plein-air art groups. He gives workshops in Urban Sketching and Figure Drawing and is represented by two galleries on Vancouver Island.

Perfecting The Teapot

WEEKEND ONE (2-days): June 22 – 23, 2019   Classes run 9 am – 4 pm daily and students are welcome to stay late in their studio.

Perfecting The Teapot

This is a course to expand your creative approach to teapots. Starting with paper sketches and then moving to clay sketches, students will be encouraged  to rethink their designs for teapots.

Activities will include a short collaborative exercise where spouts, handles and lids will be freely exchanged to generate ideas and create possible prototype teapots. This will be the starting point to help you refine your ideas before completing a functioning drip free teapot.

The focus will be on wheel thrown teapots, but does not exclude other methods of making.
Work will not be fired. This is a hands on workshop and the focus will be on developing ideas.

Workshop level: Intermediate / Advanced, students must be comfortable throwing pots on the wheel and must have experience making pots with lids.

Clive Tucker

Clive Tucker is a BC potter with a studio in Port Moody B.C. He began as an apprentice to Lotte Glob in Scotland in 1993. He moved to Canada and made production pottery selling wholesale to 15 stores across Ontario. In 1998 he moved again to Vancouver and there studied at Emily Carr Art School. Upon graduating he was invited to be the artist in residence at the Port Moody Art Centre. Here he perfected the marriage of art and production and had solo shows at the Burlington Art Centre, the BC Gallery of Ceramics and the Seymour Art Gallery.

Now he operates his own studio in Port Moody which has a small retail space where he sells funky teapots, colourful growlers and fantastic sculptures.

Amazed & Glazed

WEEK TWO (5-day): July 1 – 5, 2019   Classes run from 9 am – 4 pm daily and students are welcome to stay late in their studio.

Amazed & Glazed

Learn the basics of glaze formulation and adjustment. Amaze yourself that you can make your OWN glaze and understand how to make found glaze recipes your own. We’ll go through the basics of glaze creation and testing, from kitchen chemistry to using glaze software to better understand what’s in those glaze recipes and what each material does.

All participants will receive a free copy of the instructor’s HyperGlaze software, along with lessons on how to use it. The focus of the class will be on cone 6 oxidation glazes, but the principals outlined work with all temperatures of glazes.

Workshop level: Intermediate (Beginning glaze makers are welcome but some ceramic experience is required)

Richard Burkett

Richard is an Emeritus Professor of Art at San Diego State University, after teaching there for 30 years. His work focuses on soda firing, glazes, and vessel forms, both functional and sculptural. He received the M.F.A. degree in both ceramics and photography from Indiana University in 1986. From 1973 to 1983 he ran the Wild Rose Pottery in Bainbridge, Indiana.

Richard has traveled extensively in Ecuador over the last 25 years with Joe Molinaro of Eastern Kentucky University, researching and photographing Ecuadorian potters and documenting indigenous pottery cultures in the Amazon basin. He is the co-author of Mythical Figures & Mucawas: Ceramics from the Ecuadorian Amazon; Ceramics: A Potter’s Handbook, and Masters: Porcelain: Major Works by Leading Ceramists. He created HyperGlaze, educational glaze calculation software for artists. Burkett has lectured in Korea, Ecuador, Sweden, Turkey, and Finland. In his spare time he plays bluegrass music.

Contemporary Chinese Brush Painting

WEEKEND TWO (2-day): June 29 – 30, 2019   Classes run from 9 am – 4 pm each day and students are welcome to stay late in their studio.

Contemporary Chinese Brush Painting

This workshop is designed for people who are interested in Chinese art and will introduce both traditional and contemporary Chinese Brush Painting techniques. Students will learn about ink, rice paper, colour, composition, and aesthetic principles of Chinese Brush Painting. In addition, students will also learn how to make special textures on rice paper using non-traditional materials. Instruction will include instructor demonstrations, lectures, slide presentations and lots of individual attention. Students will be encouraged to explore their personal style on rice paper by using this ancient medium. Some experience in painting will help, but is not necessary.

Andy Lou

Andy Lou, a renowned Chinese-Canadian artist was born in China and educated in the United States. With a M.F.A. degree, Andy offers Contemporary Chinese Brush Painting Workshops throughout Canada, the U.S. and China. Andy adapts a variety of techniques and thoughts from the West, but emphasize his oriental originality.

Employing Chinese brushes, rice paper and ink, mixing with watercolour, gouache and acrylic, Andy creates visual statements of the landscapes of North America. Vibrant colour plays an important role in his art. He blends the old and the new to forge a contrast between ink and colour, between the ancient traditions of Chinese painting and the rapidly-changing world of Western art.

Andy’s mixed media, cross-cultural paintings have been exhibited and collected worldwide and he has received numerous awards. Andy is the author of Shi Bai Lou’s Art and the co-author of three books on Chinese Brush Painting.

What better way to preserve the memories of your beloved pet or furry friend, than through capturing their likeness and personality in a painting.

Throughout the workshop students will learn an easy method for drawing and putting their image onto watercolour paper.

Included in the workshop is a guide for painting the eyes of different animals and birds so you can confidently continue exploring animal portraiture after the workshop.

Marney-Rose Edge

Marney-Rose was raised in New Zealand in the beautiful art deco seaside town of Napier. Born into a creative family; her dad was an avid amateur photographer, and her mum hand coloured photographs and dabbled in pastels. Ever since being a child, Marney-Rose has loved creating beautiful things; always fascinated with colour. She is a late bloomer venturing into painting in her forties but has an inexhaustible passion for it.

A natural teacher, Marney-Rose has a following with her watercolour classes and workshops.  She teaches privately and for various Art Associations, travelling to different locations inside and outside British Columbia.
Marney-Rose paints realistically, influenced by romantic beauty and an ethereal softness creating for you an escape from the everyday. She has had work published in Splash 18 and 20 The Best of Watercolour and Acrylicworks 5 and 6 the Best of Acrylics.

Her studio is located at 1000 Parker St in East Vancouver, and is open to the public at various times of the year.

Painting a Portrait in Watercolour

Painting a Portrait in Watercolour

The unpredictable nature of water can be daunting; however, the unbridled freedom can be the medium’s greatest asset. With a focus on painting a realistic portrait in watercolour, this class will simplify each stage of the process by employing techniques that offer students more control of the medium. Students will learn the importance of an accurate drawing, prior to the painting stage. Working over a detailed drawing allows artists to control the outcome of the final painting.  The monochromatic block-in is instrumental in controlling the proper values in the portrait. This neutral layer of colour sets the stage for the subsequent layers of full colour. Thin glazes of colour are applied over the neutral layer and the result is a portrait with heightened realism. The instructor will give demonstrations each day and offer individual critiques.  

All levels welcome, but previous drawing experience is requested.

Mario Andres Robinson

Mario Andres Robinson was born in Altus, Oklahoma, where he resided with his family before relocating to New Jersey at the age of twelve. Robinson studied at the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. In 2014, Robinson was chosen to be a Brand Ambassador for Winsor and Newton art materials. He is the author of “Lessons in Realistic Watercolor,” a comprehensive guide of the artist’s watercolor techniques (Monacelli Press).

The work of Mario Andres Robinson fits squarely within the tradition of American painting. Robinson’s finished works bear a close affinity to the masters of the realist tradition, Andrew Wyeth and Thomas Eakins. Containing few references to modern life, Robinson’s work has a timeless and universal quality, and exhibits a distinct turn-of-the-century stylistic aesthetic. The images he chooses, which refer to a bygone era where solitude and reflection were abundant, also provoke frequent allusions to the paintings of Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. Mario Andres Robinson is an Exhibiting Artist Member (EAM) of The National Arts Club, an Artist Member of The Salmagundi Club and a Signature Member of The Pastel Society of America. His work has been featured several times in The Artist’s Magazine, The Pastel Journal, Watercolor Magic, American Art Collector, Fine Art Connoisseur and on the cover of American Artist magazine. In the February, 2006 issue of The Artist’s Magazine, Mario was selected as one of the top 20 realist artists under the age of 40.

Crackled 3D Effects with Polymer Clay

Crackled 3D Effects with Polymer Clay: Muses, Canvases and Wearable Art

This lively workshop will introduce students to a unique technique for working with polymer clay that will create a crackled, metallic effect that can be used in multiple ways to make vividly coloured creations.

Students will learn how to construct and embellish expressive wall-mounted “Muses”, three dimensional compositions on canvas, and funky earrings and pins.

The workshop is appropriate for all students who have basic hands-on polymer clay experience.  Advanced students will be encouraged to explore beyond the parameters of the class with support as required.

Gera Scott Chandler

Gera  has lived on the west coast of Canada all her life. She studied Education at Simon Fraser University and taught in West Vancouver for ten years with a focus on art as a basis for an integrated curriculum. After her teaching career and subsequent self-directed studies with various mediums including ceramics and paper arts, she was led to polymer clay, which has proven to be the perfect foundation medium for her mixed media approach.

Gera has been a full-time artisan since 1997 and her work is in collections in Canada, USA, Europe, Australia and Japan. She has been involved in juried shows including Sooke Fine Arts, Sidney Fine Arts and The International Polymer Clay Association’s Progress and Possibilities exhibition in Baltimore as well as juried shows presented by the Island Artisans Association. She has developed a series of polymer clay workshops which she has taught in BC and Ontario.

Mentored Residency

This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy 9 days of uninterrupted studio time with the freedom to explore new creative concepts, experiment with new techniques, and take your art to the next level. Your time in the studio will be supported by a mentor.

Participants will share a studio space with another artist over the 9 days.

The Mentored Residency is geared towards artists who want to work on their own artwork and have an idea in mind about why they would like to work with a mentor.

Don Farrell

Canadian painter Don Farrell was born in Vancouver in 1942 and now resides in Qualicum Beach, BC.

In 1984, Don was awarded the “RI Medal”, as well as receiving Honourable Mention for work submitted to the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours Annual Exhibition in London, England. In April of the same year he was elected a full member of the Royal Institute and was also elected a full member of The Royal Society of British Artists in July 1985.

Don’s work was also selected for the Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibitions in 2004 and 2005. Don regularly participates in the annual exhibitions of the RI at the Mall Gallery in London.

Don’s work has been moving towards abstract considerations, focusing on composition in contemporary art.   His work contains recurring motifs of tiny markings and shapes, as well as etched characters or patterns that can hint at a narrative.  It is these qualities which makes Don’s paintings all the more rewarding with each closer inspection and which give them their lasting appeal.
