WEEK TWO (5-day): July 1 – 5, 2019 Classes run 9 am – 4 pm each day and students are welcome to stay late in their studio.
In this 5-day course participants will seek to understand what makes painting contemporary or relevant in today’s multifaceted and competitive art world.
At the beginning of the class artists will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and share a few images. Every morning the group will undertake stimulating exercises intended to create openings and provide direction. In the afternoon there will be time to concentrate, progress, and apply observations to one’s work. Sara will end the day with a supportive and insightful group critique.
Throughout the course the instructor will give short lectures to impart her views on the painting scene and uncover some of the fascinating approaches and discourses in painting today. There will also be a couple of articles to read during the week that will enrich the physical experience of painting.
Using an assortment of products (provided by GOLDEN Paints) a fundamental combination of painting techniques will be practiced. Some examples include, staining, working lean or in a gestural way with mediums, applying thick gels and pastes, using grounds, masking, taping and scraping. A generous amount of time will be spent developing compositions and discussing how the elements of design function.
Both abstract and representational painters alike will gain technical skills and conceptual knowledge to make meaningful contemporary paintings.
Workshop level: Intermediate / Advanced (strong understanding of the medium of acrylic paint)
Tuition includes lunches and daily snacks. Prices are listed in Canadian Dollars and are inclusive of all applicable taxes. An accommodation package is available in QUAD or DOUBLE occupancy and includes breakfast and dinner. Click here for further details.
Sara Robichaud completed her MFA at UVIC (2009) and her BFA at Queen’s University (1995). She has taught at the Surrey Art Gallery, VISA and UVIC (during MFA). Sara has been a GOLDEN Certified Working Artist since 2006.
Robichaud’s work is rooted in formalist painting, engaging the viewer in an inquiry between the atmospheric and lyrical qualities of the form and the hard physicality of their material. Her process includes: staining, layering from chalky opaque paints to transparent saturated colours, masking, scraping viscous gels and using lace as a stencil. Enmeshed with personal life experiences, Sara explores generational feminine themes with an alluring and original visual language.
Sara is represented at Gallery Jones (Vancouver) and the Herringer Kiss (Calgary). Her work has been exhibited nationally and at international art fairs in Toronto, NY and LA and exists in numerous private / public collections in North America and the Middle East.
NOTE: This is a scent free course. The instructor has an intense reaction to synthetic smells and requires that her teaching environment be scent free. This includes things like hair spray, deodorant, fabric softeners, hand cream, basically anything with a strong fragrance. She appreciates your sensitivity and attention to this important request. Sara can be contacted if further clarification is needed.
