I have worked in the encaustic medium for a number of years. First in my University BFA program and today as a professional artist.
Encaustic painting is an ancient technique, dating back to the Greeks, who used wax to caulk ship hulls. Pigmenting the wax gave rise to the decorating of warships. The use of encaustic on panels rivaled the use of tempera in what are the earliest known portable easel paintings.
Modern day Encaustic Painting benefits from the use of propane torch or heat gun to smooth and direct the wax. Adding collage elements further enhances the beauty of this ancient medium.
