This is a 2-day workshop. All classes run 9 – 4 pm each day with lunch included from 12 – 1 pm.
This project uses leather hard slabs, which are cut using a template and assembled. There is also a base
that the lantern sits on which holds a candle. Small shapes and patterns are carved into the lantern to let
the light through.
This process teaches how to use various tools to create beveled corners and smooth secure joints. It
translates to all sorts of creations using slabs. The carved patterns are designed by each participant/artist
and can be as intricate or simple as desired. The result, when a candle is placed inside, is a object of
peace and serenity.
Discussions:
-architectural forms
-pattern design
-historical and contemporary lanterns from around the world, especially the middle east

Please note the Instructor will prepare the slabs the night before the class, and clay is included in the price of tuition. There will not be enough time to fire the lanterns.
