Approaching the Portrait in Oils

June 29 - 30

Approaching the Portrait in Oils

WEEKEND TWO (2-day): June 29 – 30, 2019   Classes run from 9 am – 4 pm each day and students are welcome to stay late in their studio.

Approaching the Portrait in Oils

Portraits don’t need to be intimidating!

This beginning portrait class will show students how to break down the process into manageable bite-sized pieces. You’ll start by tracing the image to the canvas ensuring an accurate drawing and likeness. Then the fun begins!

The instructor will demonstrate how to make dramatic eyes, expressive mouths and realistic noses and avoid common mistakes. Students will receive individual guidance and instruction to overcome problem areas. You’ll will learn how colours can help make forms look three dimensional. This class will get you familiar with the basics of portraiture and help you shake your fear of painting faces.

A variety of reference photos will be provided but students may use their own with approval from the instructor – consider painting your loved ones, or even a self portrait!

Carol Koebbeman

Carol Koebbeman is a Victoria artist best known for her portrait and figurative paintings, but her past explorations includes significant work in fibre art and woodworking. She holds a BFA in fibre arts from the Kansas City Art Institute with an emphasis on sculptural wall pieces and intricate dying techniques.

Since 2010 her focus has been on portraiture with strong story lines. She is drawn to images of quiet moments of individuals lost in their own thought when they’re in their own environment and feeling safe. Rather than capturing a person when they appear confident or brave, Carol wants to capture the times when they’re feeling confused or doubtful.

Her work can be found in collections in both Canada and the United States
