Understanding Islamic and Geometric Design

Understanding Islamic and Geometric Design

This is a 2-day workshop.  Classes run 9-4pm with lunch included.

In this two-day workshop, students learn how to draw and create Islamic geometric designs. These patterns can be used in a variety of applications including: painting, mosaic floor and wall tiles, decoration for ceramics and quilting. Understanding the basic concepts behind the structure of these patterns will provide students with the knowledge to continue to create these geometric designs at home—from large-scale designs such as wall murals to one-of-a-kind hand painted greeting cards.

The teaching method includes slides of historic and contemporary Islamic designs in artwork and examples designed, drawn and painted by students. Participants are provided with a complete workbook to use as a record of study as well as a reference and refresher.

In this workshop, students are shown how to draw and understand the motifs and elements in Islamic design and how to repeat them on a grid to create larger pattern. During this weekend workshop, students will create a 22 x 28 inch drawing on watercolour paper, which can be personalized and coloured with pencil crayons or watercolours.
