“Pick Me” – Salon
Photo, 2020, archival pigment print on fine art paper
10×10 in., LE: 2/5
Using a simple camera and crazed light (caustic optics) passing through a warped-glass object, I pull complex, painterly and always unexpected images from banal settings. There was no garden, no bouquet present when I captured this. But seems that’s what the disrupted moment wanted there to be.

Georgina Montgomery
Canadian abstract/contemporary artist Georgina Montgomery has worked in several mediums, including paint, mixed media, hot glass and assemblage. Her practice combines her love of abstract expressionism and colour field painting with her fascination with time: how we understand its scale, measure it, experience it, describe it.
Since 2019 her studio focus has been a photography-based project, harnessing distorted light (caustic optics) to create works that have the sensuality and complexity of abstract paintings. Using only a small camera and a single warped-glass object, she conjures rich, dynamic and unexpected compositions and colour from banal settings. This unusual lens train and (by most photography standards, unconventional technique) enables her to intentionally “see less in order to see more”—and in the process reveal an astounding amount of “there there,” marvel in every moment.
