Expressive Colour in Soft Pastels

Expressive Colour in Soft Pastels

Colours in soft pastel paintings can be gentle and luminous, or they can be graphic and bold. They can be dark and mysterious or colourful and vibrant. This workshop will be all about understanding and becoming confident with your use of colour.

We’ll explore aspects of colour like value (because doing so will not only help you create more powerful paintings but will also give you freedom with colour), hue (what the colour itself does), and intensity (magic can happen!). We’ll also look at colour temperature and how pushing a painting into cool or warm directions can affect a viewer. You’ll discover what happens when colours are placed side-by-side or layered. All with a limited number of pastel sticks!

Through the week we’ll progress from a literal interpretation of a subject (still life and landscape) to a more intuitive and expressive one. We’re artists and our purpose isn’t merely to copy what we see. Instead, it’s to react to and share our expression and understanding of the world.

So leave your comfort place at home! This workshop is a safe place to challenge yourself to express yourself in colour in new ways and to revel in the creative process and risk-taking. You’ll return home feeling inspired and empowered to jump right into a new piece.

Gail will assist students individually as they work and also give feedback in group critiques.

Material fee includes a sample set of 36 Unison pastels from the Sibley proprietary set of colours, and two sheets of sanded paper.
