Drypoint Printmaking

Drypoint Printmaking

Drypoint Printmaking

An introduction to drypoint printmaking – A scratched line on a copper or plexiglass plate holds ink wiped onto the plate. The excess ink is removed and the inked image is transferred to dampened paper with the use of a printing press. This technique differs from etching in that there is no acid involved and there can be a velvety quality and variation to the drawn line. Tonal areas can be added by roughening the plate with sandpaper. This printmaking technique is wonderful for those who love to draw and are open to the unpredictable and magical transformation that printmaking can offer.

Students will:
Learn to create drypoint plates
Learn the technique of wiping intaglio plates using printmaking ink
Become familiar with the use of an etching press
Understand how to finish and present their prints
