Writing this “bio” for the MISSA SHOP AND SALON, Derek Kasper was taken aback to realize that he has been working with clay for 30 years! Most of that time has been as “an artist with a day job” but he has taken it up full time for a couple of years now and is loving the ability to focus on ideas and challenging work. He has a bit of a reputation locally for larger work, and textured surfaces. Three main areas of exploration are thrown large decorative stoneware bowls and jars, large hand-built faceted forms created from textured curved slabs and highly chattered and thin translucent porcelain bowls and jars.
He is a previous winner of an Award of Excellence at the Sooke Fine Arts Show for a large expanded cubic jar titled “Hope Container”. He was an award winner at the Sidney Fine Arts Show for a piece titled “Mother’s Memory” and in 2018 he was the winner of the Best 3D entry in the Art Victoria Now show. He is mainly self-taught, but was a regular at Cedar Hill Arts Centre as student, volunteer, and teacher, and has attended numerous sessions at Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts.
