Abstract Reduction Mokuhanga (Japanese Woodblock Printmaking)

Abstract Reduction Mokuhanga (Japanese Woodblock Printmaking)

Mokuhanga is a traditional waterbased printmaking method developed in Japan in the early sixteen
hundreds. Many of the iconic Japanese images we still see today, such as The Great Wave off
Kanagawa, were created in this method.

This course is a more fluid approach to Mokuhanga by using a single woodblock for repeated carvings
and printings in the reduction style. By looking at negative space through still life drawing, the artist will
build an image through disassociated shapes and colour.

This is a non-toxic printmaking method that uses brushes and barens instead of a printmaking press. It is
a combination of traditional and contemporary printmaking.
